Carrie Lam calls British judges' departure 'political arrangement'
01:33

Calling the resignation of two British judges "political arrangement," Chief Executive Carrie Lam defended the rule of law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) at a regular press conference on Thursday morning.

Lam said she regretted the resignation of the UK Supreme Court's Lord Robert Reed and Lord Patrick Hodge.

"The whole thing is a political arrangement. It's quite obvious that some officials or politicians want to override, or interfere in the decisions of judges. It is totally clear to all, that the British government officials and British politicians have used these means to damage our much respected independent judicial system, and I feel that this is very regrettable."

She added that the National Security Law is "a very essential and legitimate legislation to restore law and order in Hong Kong."
