What can we expect in the days to come?

In a couple of hours, the EU Foreign Affairs Council will meet to discuss the Union's support for Ukraine. The Council will approve $544 million of military funding, bringing total EU security support for Ukraine to 1.6 billion dollars since the Russian special military operations began.

The move follows Brussels' approval of the fifth round of sanctions, including a ban on Russian coal. But this ban on Russian oil and fossil fuels has been a major issue of contention. Some in the EU believe these actions are inadequate. Senior diplomat Joseph Borrell highlighted that the funds pale in comparison to the 38 billion dollars Russia has received in energy revenues since the beginning of the armed conflict. He has urged the European Commission to propose actions to reduce this dependence.

On the other hand, there's resistance from EU member states such as Germany and Hungary, which are largely dependent on Russian energy. This means that a total energy ban is improbable in the short to medium term. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council is expected to hold an open meeting later today on how to restore peace and security in Ukraine.
