Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park on Monday to learn about efforts to protect the environment and biodiversity.
Located in south China's Hainan Province, the park boasts one of the best preserved and largest contiguous tropical rainforests in China.
The park covers nine cities and counties, with a total area of 4,400 square km or about one-seventh of the land area of Hainan Island.
While visiting the Wuzhishan section of the park, Xi stressed that Hainan is a province of ecological resources and the work of building the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is top priority.
He said the construction of the park is related to the development of the whole country. He stressed the strategic significance of the park construction and urged local officials to make persistent efforts to make it a success.
Wuzhishan section of the park includes the 1,867-meter-high Wuzhishan Mountain, the highest mountain in Hainan with five undulating peaks in the shape of five fingers.
The section is home to 15 species of wild plants and animals under first class state protection, 284 species of Hainan endemic plants and 345 species of terrestrial vertebrate wild animals.
