Russia rejects U.S. claims of alleged use of chemical weapons as 'baseless'

The Russian embassy in the U.S. on Wednesday called a U.S. claim regarding the alleged use of chemical weapons "baseless" and urged it to stop spreading disinformation.

"The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are successfully carrying out all their tasks on the Ukrainian territory. At the same time, they do not and cannot have any chemical warfare agents at their disposal because our country eliminated all chemical weapons stockpiles back in 2017," the embassy said in a statement.

The response came after U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Tuesday that the U.S. is concerned that Russia may still use chemical weapons in its weeks-long campaign in Ukraine.

"We are concerned, as we've said before, that Russia may seek to resort to chemical weapons," Price said during a press briefing. "Russia has a track record. Russia has used these agents on its own people."

The embassy said the U.S. statement is provocative. "Ned Price once again distinguished himself with his idle talk, not substantiated by a single piece of evidence."
