U.S. consumer prices have surged to their highest levels in four decades. The labor department says the consumer price index (CPI) jumped by 8.5 percent from a year ago. The CPI measures a wide range of goods and services. Gas prices accounted for half of the increase. This comes amid a U.S. ban on Russian energy imports as part of sanctions over Moscow's military operation in Ukraine.
