An article by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on promoting the high-quality and sustainable development of China's social security will be published on Saturday. 

The article by Xi, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, will be published in this year's eighth issue of the Qiushi Journal, the flagship magazine of the CPC Central Committee. 

The article underscores social security's important role in ensuring and improving people's livelihoods, safeguarding social fairness, promoting economic and social development, and ensuring that all people share benefits of reform and development. 

It calls for efforts to improve redistribution, strengthen functions of mutual assistance and support, and bring more people into the social security system. 

Efforts should be made to provide more reliable and adequate protection for the people and meet their multi-level and diversified needs, it adds. 

The article calls for improving a fair, unified, sustainable and multi-level social security system that covers all people in urban and rural areas, stressing that the social security network should be further tightened. 

It calls for accelerating nationwide pooling of basic pension funds and advancing the reform of raising the statutory retirement age in a smooth manner.
