One person was killed and more than 1,200 people were displaced after a series of fires ripped through Joe Slovo informal settlements in Langa of Cape Town, South Africa, on Saturday night, local media HeraldLIVE quoted Cape Town disaster management as saying.

About 300 wood or iron structures have been destroyed or damaged, according to the city's preliminary assessment.

Authorities said the cause of the fires was still unknown.
