Shanghai reported 3,238 new locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and 21,582 asymptomatic carriers on April 16, according to the municipal health commission. Officials said April 16 saw a total of 373 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases discharged from hospitals and 10,337 asymptomatic carriers discharged from centralized isolation in Shanghai.

As of 9 a.m. Sunday, over 340,000 close contacts of COVID-19 cases in Shanghai have been screened out, and the situation is under control. The director of the Shanghai Health Commission said vaccination is proven to be effective in preventing severe and critical cases and suggested that senior citizens get vaccinated as soon as possible.
