Shanghai reported three COVID-19 deaths and 2,417 new locally transmitted infections on Sunday, local authorities announced on Monday.

All three deaths were elderly people who were unvaccinated against COVID-19. They all had serious comorbidities, including acute coronary syndrome, diabetes, hypertension and sequelae of cerebral infarction.

After being sent to the hospital, the three patients' conditions worsened and they unfortunately passed away after rescue efforts failed.

The direct cause of the three deaths was not COVID-19 but the comorbidities, said Wu Qianyu, a senior inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission.

A total of 19,831 new asymptomatic cases were recorded in the city on Sunday.
