Russian military forces have captured Mariupol apart from Azovstal plant, where about 2,000 Ukrainian fighters still remain, Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu told President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Putin has ordered canceling the assault on the Azovstal industrial zone and said he wanted it to be blockaded instead.

Ukraine has not responded to the claim.
