Early morning in Odessa. Alyona took this video of the Black Sea on March 21. She told me, it was a terrifying morning.

ALYONA STEPANOVA Odessa Resident "I was sleeping at the time. It was 6:20 a.m. The shockwave raised my bed. Then I realized what had happened, because there were air alerts before. I'm still nervous even now."

This is the effects of a shell that landed just outside of her apartment. Fragments hit the windows. Alyona says she was not the worst affected. This community is even closer to the sea. Local people call it Shanhay, meaning "old houses area" in Ukrainian.

ZHAO YUNFEI Odessa "We knocked on many doors, but nobody answered. Some gates are locked. It's been more than a month since the shelling, but few people have returned."

We met Sergiy. The windows in his house are broken. He shows us the debris on the floor.

SERGIY GURTOVOY Odessa Resident "No, but we were here the next day, and we found so much damage."

He says it will take some time to repair everything but it's not safe now.

SERGIY GURTOVOY Odessa Resident "I think this is dangerous because there are warships out there. The shelling may happen again."

Sergiy says he hopes to come back in summer to be close to the beach. But probably not now.
