The Horn of Africa region is facing the driest conditions in more than four decades after three consecutive rainy seasons failed. Up to 20 million people could go hungry this year as delayed rains worsen extreme drought amid a shortfall in humanitarian aid, the United Nations World Food Program said on April 19, 2022. Weather patterns in the area indicate the rains are likely to fail again this year. An increase in food prices due to the conflict in Ukraine also helped worsen the situation.
