Technician devotes surgeon-like skills to China's missile building
00:38

A technician has devoted 34 years to China's missile manufacturing industry with his surgeon-like precision processing skills. Yan Min is the chief operator of the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine at Hubei Sanjiang Space Jiangbei Mechanical Engineering, one of China's key manufacturers in building carrier rockets and missiles. He is now working on the engine nozzle, an important device for energy conversion in carrier rockets and missiles. To ensure the smooth operation of the engine, the margin of error for key parts of the nozzle is only 0.005 millimeters. "The 0.005 millimeters means one third of the diameter of a hair filament. He can make it and ensure the precision of the device. So he is known as the 'key part surgeon' in our industry," said Yang Yong, one of Yan's apprentices. The key parts made by Yan have an astonishing qualification rate of 100 percent.
