Sri Lanka's government declares state of emergency after protests

Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency for the second time in five weeks after a day of protests and strikes outside parliament. Police fired tear gas and water cannons at the demonstrators. A spokesman for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said he invoked the state of emergency to "ensure public order."
