French President Emmanuel Macron on May 8 placed wreaths at the statue of Charles de Gaulle and on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to mark the anniversary of World War II Victory Day. Commemorating the victory of the Allies over Nazi Germany on May 8, 1945, 11 months after the D-Day landings in Normandy, is an annual ritual for French presidents. The ceremony marks the 77th anniversary of VE Day, and was held a day after Macron was inaugurated for a second term as president.
