Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas bids farewell to Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, May 12, 2022. /Reuters

An official memorial ceremony of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot dead while covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin on Wednesday, was held at the presidential compound in Ramallah, Palestine on Thursday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said at the ceremony that on Israeli authorities were “fully responsible” for the killing of Abu Akleh and called for an international investigation.

Abu Akleh, 51, a Palestinian-American who lives in East Jerusalem, has been working for Al-Jazeera for more than 20 years. She had covered hard news in the Palestinian territories, mainly the conflict and tensions between Israel and the Palestinians.
