Finnish President Sauli Niinisto had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about NATO membership on Saturday.

Niinisto said that the Ukraine crisis had altered the security environment of Finland and the country decided to seek NATO membership in the next few days.

"The conversation was direct and straight-forward and it was conducted without aggravations. Avoiding tensions was considered important," Niinisto said.
