What we know about Buffalo supermarket shooting and suspect Payton Gendron
01:17

Payton S. Gendron, an 18-year-old white male from Conklin, New York, wearing military gear and livestreaming with a helmet camera, opened fire with a rifle at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, on May 14. Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph A. Gramaglia said he shot and killed 10 Black people, and injured two white people and one Black person before surrendering to authorities in a rampage he broadcast live on the streaming platform Twitch. CNN reported that the suspect had been extensively planning his attack for several months.

According to Gendron's posts on Discord, which he also shared on the hate-filled online forum 4Chan, he chose Buffalo as his site of attack because the city's 14208 zip code has a higher Black population than the other locations he was considering. Gendron was arraigned before Buffalo City Court Chief Judge Craig Hannah on one count of first-degree murder, the district attorney's news release said. He pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole, Hannah said.

U.S. President Joe Biden called for a thorough investigation of the Buffalo shooting and said that the nation "must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism."
