The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that 694 Ukrainian fighters trapped at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol had "surrendered" in one day, including 29 wounded.

It also said that 959 fighters had "surrendered" at the Azovstal plant in total, including 80 wounded, of which 51 who needed inpatient treatment were transferred to the Novoazovsk hospital in Donetsk.

Ukraine has called for a prisoner swap for fighters evacuated from the steelworks.
