The spotted seal, a first-class protected wild animal in China, is the only pinniped to breed in Chinese waters. The marine mammals come to the Yantai sea area from cold waters at high latitudes every December, feed and rest in the area, and return northwards in May. On their way back, they will often rest on a particular reef that has now taken their name: Seal Reef.
