Nail salons are ubiquitous in New York, allowing customers to get mani-pedis at very low prices. But for nail technicians, that translates into low wages, unpredictable hours, exposure to harsh chemicals and no benefits. The immigrant women who dominate the trade are uniting to lobby the State Assembly to establish minimum industry standards.
