A strong thunderstorm swept through Yulin City in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on May 22. During the storm, a few bolts of the lightning flashed into the sky from the ground. This is a rare occurrence called – upward lightning/ground to cloud lightning. Upward lightning is the development of self-propagating lightning leading from a tall object that travels upward toward the overlaying electrified storm cloud.
