China's maternal and infant mortality rates have both dropped to a historical low, according to the National Health Commission. Song Li, head of the commission's department of maternal and child health, said China recorded a maternal mortality rate of 16.1 per 100,000 in 2021. The mortality rate for infants fell to 5 per thousand, and for children under five, 7.1 per thousand.
