Mount Bulusan, a volcano on Luzon Island in the Philippines, erupted on Sunday morning, sending a plume of ash kilometers high. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology characterized the event as a phreatic eruption, which occurs when magma heats groundwater or surface water.
