Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday sent a congratulatory letter to a national event for World Environment Day, held in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province. He called for efforts to build a beautiful China where people and nature can coexist, and make greater contributions to building a clean and beautiful world.

In the letter, Xi pointed out that the ecological environment is the foundation for human beings' life and development and hailed China's efforts in ecological protection.

"Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), we have put the construction of ecological civilization as a fundamental plan of China's sustainable development, adhered to the concept of 'lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,' and carried out a series of fundamental, pioneering and long-term work," wrote Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, in the letter.

The Chinese president vowed to further promote the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development in the country, urging actions from the whole society.
