Some 76.7 percent of people voted in favor of the amendments to Kazakhstan’s Constitution, the Astana Times reported citing the exit poll results announced at midnight on Monday by Head of the Sotsis-A Institute for Social Research Alibek Tazhibayev.
Citing an alternative exit poll by Qogamdyq Pikir (Public Opinion) Research Institute, the Astana Times said that 74.8 percent of respondents casted their votes for the amendments and 25.2 percent of respondents voted against them.
Kazakhstan’s proposed amendments to its constitution would include a transition from a super-presidential form of government to a presidential one with a strong parliament, the establishment of the constitutional court, prohibition of the death penalty and improved mechanisms for protecting citizens' rights.
The country’s Central Referendum Commission (CRC) declared 68.44 percent voter turnout as polling stations closed across Kazakhstan on Sunday night.
