China's 'gaokao' kicks off with nearly 12m candidates registered

China's annual College Entrance Examination, or "gaokao," is underway in most parts of the country. This year, a record 11.93 million candidates have registered for it, with 300,000 examination sites nationwide. In Beijing, more than 54,000 students have registered.
