Dominican Republic minister shot dead in office by close friend

The Dominican Republic's environment minister, Orlando Jorge Mera, was shot dead on Monday during a meeting by a longtime friend, who has been taken into custody, the government said. Authorities identified the assailant as Miguel Cruz and said the reason for the shooting remains unclear.
