Remote Killing: The 'tragic mistake' that the U.S. military made in Afghanistan before withdrawing
04:19

The U.S. military conducted a drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed 10 civilians on August 29, 2021. Following investigations, the U.S. Department of Defense concluded that none of the U.S. military officers and soldiers involved in the drone attack would face any form of disciplinary action, although the attack that killed civilians was a "tragic mistake". The decision was undoubtedly another blow to the family of Zamaray Ahmadi, the victim of the airstrike.
Ahmadi was an Afghan employee of a U.S. humanitarian agency. The attack also killed seven children. Ahmadi's courtyard is now empty. Farshad Haidari, Zamaray Ahmadi’s nephew, lived in the house for several months. Haidari's brother was visiting Ahmadi's family, and was also killed in the attack.
This is Haidari's recollection of what happened that day.
