A senior Chinese military official on Saturday warned of "a subversive impact" on China-U.S. relations if the Taiwan question is not properly handled.

Speaking at a press conference on the sideline of the ongoing 19th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Zhang Zhenzhong, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department of China's Central Military Commission, said the Taiwan question is the issue that is most likely to lead China-U.S. relations to conflict and confrontation.

Zhang said the Taiwan question is an internal issue for China, and the one-China principle is the political foundation of China-U.S. relations.
