As a folk song in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region goes, "The land of Ningxia resembles a spindle without rest, with the Yellow River in the east and Helan Mountains in the west." For thousands of years, the majestic Helan Mountains, hailed by the local people as the "father mountains," have impeded Siberian cold currents from advancing eastward and stalled the invasion of the Tengger Desert.
