Chinese third seed Zheng Qinwen beat Hungary’s Reka-Luca Jani 7-6(4), 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the WTA Valencia Open and advanced to the last four on Friday.

Zheng’s world ranking rose to 54th, only four points behind China’s Zhang Shuai. The 19 year old will face the tournament’s first seed, Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the semi-finals. With a win, she would overtake Zhang’s place in the world rankings.

China’s Wang Xiyu battled past Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) and progressed to the next round. She will face Sweden’s Mirjam Bjorklund for a spot in the final.

Zheng Qinwen will start her grass court season next week at the WTA German Open.
