The ancient town of Pingyao in north China's Shanxi Province, a world cultural heritage site is noted for its exquisite lacquerware. Among Pingyao's lacquerware, jewelry boxes are the bestsellers, followed by paintings. Lacquered furniture used to be popular in the old days. The 2,000-year-old craft of creating Pingyao lacquerware is known for its "palm polishing" technique. The craftsmen first uses fine sandpaper and then uses human hair to polish the lacquer with their palms, then the lacquered product is covered with soybean oil and sprinkled with fine brick dust, and is polished again.
