01:02

June 20 marks World Refugee Day. According to a joint communique by the World Food Program and the United Nations Refugee Agency, the number of refugees in East Africa has increased from 1.82 million to nearly 5 million in the past decade, with an increase of 300,000 in the past year. Macharia Munene, a Kenyan professor, says that floods and droughts have become more frequent and intense, severely affecting the food security in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan, forcing many people to leave their homes.
