World Refugee Day: More than 100 million people now displaced worldwide
01:34

June 20 is World Refugee Day. This year, the focus will be on people's right to seek safety. The number of people forced to flee conflict, violence, human rights violations and persecution has now surpassed 100 million for the first time on record, according to the UNHCR website. UNHCR stressed in its report that 2021 was notable for the number of conflicts that escalated and new ones that flared: 23 countries, with a combined population of 850 million, faced medium or high-intensity conflicts. It also says food scarcity, inflation and climate crisis are adding to people's hardship, stretching the humanitarian response just as the funding outlook in many situations appears bleak. "Either the international community comes together to take action to address this human tragedy, resolve conflicts and find lasting solutions, or this terrible trend will continue," says Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
