Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met on Sunday with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and discussed bilateral ties and regional security.

Raisi said the two countries are willing to continue to strengthen economic and trade exchanges and deepen bilateral relations.

Speaking at a joint press conference, the Iranian president noted that countries in the region should enhance dialogue to solve their problems, and warned that any foreign intervention will only create problems. 

Al-Kadhimi said that Iran and Iraq have agreed to seek stability in the Middle East. 

"We have agreed to work together to bring stability and calm to the region," the Iraqi prime minister said in a joint televised news conference with Raisi.

Al-Kadhimi, leading a high-ranking delegation of political and economic officials, arrived in Tehran earlier on Sunday, a day after he visited Saudi Arabia in a bid to revive talks between the regional rivals to ease years of hostility.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2016 in protest against the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran following the Saudi execution of a Shiite cleric.
