'Lighting Up the Stars' tops weekly box office

Attendance at movie theaters on the Chinese mainland has picked up with the release of new domestic films.

From June 20 to 26, the mainland's box office revenue reached 484 million yuan (about $72.3 million), up 26.7 percent from the previous month, with 12.97 million moviegoers, up 198.98 percent from the previous month, according to the China Movie Database.

Drama "Lighting Up the Stars" took the top spot in the week with earnings of 239 million yuan, surpassing Hollywood sci-fi "Jurassic World: Domination."

The film tells the story of a mortician released from prison who unexpectedly changes his attitude towards his career and life when he meets an orphan during a funeral.

"Lighting Up the Stars" currently has a 7.5 out of 10 rating on Douban, China's equivalent of Rotten Tomatoes.

"One Week Friends," which attracted much attention last week, came in third behind "Jurassic World: Domination" after its release on Thursday, crossing 47.44 million yuan. Adapted from the manga of the same name, the film tells the story of a girl who forgets her friends every week due to an accident and becomes friends with her classmates over and over again.

"Ode to the Spring," a film about ordinary but heroic Chinese people's fight against COVID-19, will be released on July 1.
