Chinese President Xi Jinping's special representative Wang Qishan will attend the inauguration ceremony of Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Wang, Chinese vice president, will lead a delegation to the Philippines for the inauguration in the capital city of Manila on June 30, at the invitation of the Philippine government, Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Marcos, 69, received more than 58 percent of the votes cast in the presidential election held on May 9 and was named the winner of the election by the Philippine Congress on May 25.

During a phone conversation with Marcos last month, President Xi said the two countries should grasp the general trend, write a grand story on the China-Philippines friendship in the new era, and follow through the blueprint for bilateral friendly cooperation to usher in an even brighter future for bilateral ties.

On Tuesday, Zhao said that the visit shows the importance China attaches to the Philippines and China-Philippines relations, and it will help broaden prospects in the development of the bilateral relations.

Xi visited the Philippines in 2018 and the two countries agreed to upgrade their ties to comprehensive strategic cooperation.

China and the Philippines established diplomatic relations on June 9, 1975.
