Eight people were killed and one was injured after a memorial arch collapsed on Sunday in a village in northern China's Hebei Province.

The 12-meter structure collapsed amid heavy rain and high winds, burying nine people who were taking shelter under it.

The incident happened at 6:28 p.m. BJT in Taitou village, authorities in Luquan District of Shijiazhuang City said in a statement.

Firefighters were deployed to the scene and later confirmed that eight people had died. The one injured was hospitalized and is in a stable condition.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
