Uzbekistan's parliament on Monday adopted a resolution to retain the sovereign status of the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan, in northwestern Uzbekistan, in the upcoming referendum on constitutional amendments.
It was also decided to extend public discussion on the proposed constitutional amendments for an additional 10 days through July 15.
The announcement came after what local authorities called "illegal public rallies organized by criminal groups" erupted in the autonomous region's capital of Nukus last week.
