Chauvin gets 21 years for civil rights violations
01:51

A federal judge sentenced Derek Chauvin to 21 years in prison on July 7 for violating George Floyd's civil rights, saying what the former Minneapolis police officer did was "simply wrong" and "offensive."

The U.S. District Judge said he “absolutely destroyed the lives of three young officers by taking command of the scene" as the most senior officer on the spot.

Even so, his sentence was at the low end of the 20 to 25 years called for in a plea agreement in which he will simultaneously serve his 22.5-year sentence for his state charges.
