China expressed condolences and sympathies to the family of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe over his death on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said in a statement on Friday.  

"China is shocked about this incident," Zhao said, adding "Abe has made contributions to developing and improving China-Japan relations."
