China hopes the UK will promote the sustainable and stable development of bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said in a news briefing on Friday.  

When asked about Boris Johnson's resignation as Conservative Party leader on Thursday, Zhao said the matter relates to the internal affairs of the UK.   

"Regardless of the changes in British politics, we hope that the British side moves in the same direction as the Chinese side, aiming for the long term and the overall situation," the spokesperson said.
