Chinese experts and heads of tech companies are calling for efforts to better protect minors in cyberspace. They discussed ways to build a healthy internet for young people during a conference on Saturday. Zheng Chunying has more.
More commitments to building a safe cyberspace for minors, that's a consensus reached by both academic experts and government officials during a conference held in Beijing on Saturday.
Participants highlighted the fact that people under the age of 19 account for about 14 percent of China's netizen population and that it was crucial to protect them from internet addiction and provide them with better content and choices.
HE GUILI Vice President Internet Society of China "The Internet Society of China will further take targeted measures to respond to online malpractice on different platforms, such as cyber bullying on social media, and push for a better cyber environment that empowers the young."
Authorities in China have long been concerned about internet addiction among its young people.
Last year, China introduced new rules that limit the amount of time that people under the age of 18 can spend on video games to three hours a week. The rule aims to combat gaming addiction.
This year, the Cyberspace Administration of China also issued a new set of rules that require internet platforms with data on more than one million users to undergo security reviews before they list overseas.
Apart from the government, many Chinese internet enterprises are also taking active steps.
ZHANG BIN Senior Researcher Tencent WeChat Strategy Research Institute "We have not only set up anti-addiction systems, but have also been continuously improving our security capabilities to reduce the risk of harmful content being available to underage users, while also teaching them about online threats so that they can be more vigilant."
ZHENG CHUNYING Beijing "Despite risks that come with misuse of the internet, experts pointed out that opportunities remain when it comes to enhancing youth learning, communication, creativity and entertainment in the digital era and that more efforts from all walks of life are needed to create a better internet for the minors.
