Rescuers have saved more than 20 people trapped in vehicles due to the torrential rains that pummeled northwest China's Gansu Province. The rain had left three vehicles carrying 18 people stranded on a mountain in Yongchang County. Local firefighters, police and other rescuers found them after searching the mountain for two hours.

In Gansu's capital Lanzhou, several people, including a pregnant woman, were trapped in their cars in floodwater. Firefighters have evacuated them all to safe places. The rain has since tapered, and local authorities are racing against time to pump out water. Expressways are closed and flights have been delayed since the heavy rain triggered an emergency response in several counties and districts.
