American forces unpopular in Astana Process: expert
03:27

Foreign forces, led by the United States, are not welcome in the Astana Process, which aims for a peaceful settlement in Syria, said a Turkish expert.

The trilateral summit among Iran, Türkiye and Russia was held on Tuesday in Iran's capital Tehran, bringing together Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. They are the leaders of the guarantor countries of the Astana Process which was initiated in 2017 for peace in Syria.

During the summit, Raisi said that the U.S. presence in the east of the Euphrates River in Syria was "unacceptable" and they should leave the region. Meanwhile, Putin said the West was trying to divide Syria.

Huseyin Bagci, president of the Foreign Policy Institute in Türkiye, believes the summit sent an important signal that foreign forces, led by the United States, are not welcome in the Astana Process.

"The biggest problem today it was mentioned the common will to fight international terrorism there and also the foreign forces meaning here, the American forces and the others that they should leave the Syrian territory," said Bagci.
