The death toll of a powerful earthquake that hit Luzon Island in the Philippines on Wednesday has been revised downward to four, local authorities said on Thursday. 

On Wednesday night, it was reported that five people were killed. The death toll was revised on Thursday after the authorities confirmed that no fatality was caused by the quake in the city of Gattaran

At least 131 people were injured.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said a magnitude-7 earthquake rattled Abra province in the northern Philippines at 8:43 a.m. local time (0043 GMT). The institute said the epicenter was located in Tayum town and had a depth of 17 kilometers.

President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos has traveled to Abra to assess the situation.

The tremor was felt in many areas on the main Luzon Island, including Metro Manila, where high-rise buildings swayed and train transport suspended operation. It was also felt in many provinces, including Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Bulacan, Laguna and Cavite.

As of 1:00 p.m. local time (0500 GMT), the institute has recorded at least 120 aftershocks in the northern region.

Vigan City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for centuries-old churches and ancestral houses, also sustained damage.
