Du Fuguo, a sergeant in the PLA Southern Theater Command, was awarded this year's August 1 Medal on July 27. On October 11, 2018, in a land mine clearance operation in southwest China's Yunnan Province, an explosion took both Du's hands and eyes. Over the past three years before the accident, Du entered mine fields more than 1,000 times. He has removed over 150 tonnes of bombs and 400 land mines, and handled over 20 emergencies.
