Rare red lightning, known as sprites, was captured on camera by a Chinese photographer against the picturesque backdrop of Guilin's landscape in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on July 27. 

Academically known as a "transient luminous event," red lightning is an electrical discharge phenomenon in the middle and upper atmosphere.
