New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan declared a public health emergency on Saturday due to the monkeypox outbreak.

The declaration allows the health commissioner to issue emergency orders and amends health code provisions "to provide for measures to help slow the spread," the mayor's office said in a statement.
